Why Your Wax or Sizzlers are Popping
If you hear a light popping or crackling from your wax burner, the most likely culprit is a tiny bit of moisture trapped within the wax or scented crystals. This often happens if they were stored in a more humid area, like a bathroom or kitchen or if steam accidentally entered the mix during the making process. Just like a drop of water in a hot frying pan, these microscopic droplets turn into steam and pop as they warm up.
The Role of Oils and Additives
Sometimes the fragrance oil or decorative extras can cause a sizzling sound. This can happen if the wax melt has a very high scent load or if the oil hasn’t fully bonded with the wax, causing it to sweat and pool at the bottom of your burner dish. Additionally, decorative elements like mica powder or glitter can create minor noises if they settle at the bottom of a very hot burner. While these sounds can be surprising, they are usually just a sign that the ingredients are reacting to the heat and are not typically a cause for alarm.
Safety First – Burner Sounds and Overheating
It is important to pay attention to the type of sound you hear. If you hear a sharp, metallic pinging or tinkering noise, it could be a sign that your burner is overheating or has structural damage. This often happens when using 8-hour tealights, which are designed for larger lanterns, not smaller wax burners. They produce too much heat, which can cause hairline cracks, fissures or even holes to form in your ceramic dish. Always inspect your burner for cracks before use, and only use 4-hour tealights to keep the temperature safe and prevent a fire hazard. We recommend allowing your burner to cool down between sessions so that it is not constantly under high temperature or switching to an electric wax burner.
How to Get a Quieter Burn
To enjoy a more peaceful experience, always store your wax melts and sizzlers in a cool, dry cupboard inside an airtight bag or jar to keep moisture out. If you suspect your burner is too hot, switching to an electric warmer can provide a more gentle, even heat that significantly reduces sizzling. Finally, always make sure your burner dish is clean and free of old wax residue or dust before adding a new scent.
