It happens in seconds. You turn your back and your toddler has picked up something sparkly and scented. Whether it is a wax melt or sizzler granules, the most important thing is to stay calm.
Many accidental ingestions in children do not lead to serious harm. However, you should always check what was swallowed and get medical advice if you are unsure.
1. What To Do Straight Away
If your child has put a wax melt or sizzlers in their mouth, stay calm so you can think clearly and act quickly. Gently remove any remaining pieces from their mouth, taking care not to push anything further back. As soon as you can, find the product packaging so you can check the safety information.
If you are unsure whether what they swallowed could be harmful, contact NHS 111 for advice. You should call 999 or go straight to A&E if your child is choking, struggling to breathe, has blue lips, is very drowsy or difficult to wake, has had a seizure, or seems seriously unwell.
Do not try to make your child sick. Do not give them anything to eat or drink unless a healthcare professional tells you to.
2. Wax Melts vs Sizzlers – Understanding the Risk
Knowing what your child has swallowed helps you understand the level of risk.
Wax melts are usually made from paraffin or soy wax mixed with fragrance oil. Small amounts of wax itself are often low risk, but wax melts are not food safe. The added fragrance oils and colours can cause irritation and swallowing larger pieces increases the risk of choking, especially in younger children.
Sizzlers, also known as simmering granules, are made from salt crystals coated in fragrance. Because they are salt based, swallowing more than a tiny amount is more concerning than a quick taste. Young children are more sensitive to salt due to their smaller body size, and the added fragrance oils can also irritate the mouth or stomach. If your child has swallowed more than a small amount of sizzlers, it is best to seek medical advice promptly.
3. How To Prevent It Happening Again
Children are naturally curious and scented products can easily be mistaken for sweets or bath products. Keeping wax melts and sizzlers stored high up and out of reach is essential, ideally in a cupboard with a lock or latch. It is also important to keep products in their original packaging so you can quickly identify ingredients if something does happen.
When using a wax burner, make sure it is placed on a high, stable surface where a child cannot reach it or pull on any cords. This reduces the risk of both ingestion and burns.
What This Means for You
A small taste of a wax melt or sizzlers may not cause harm, but these products are not designed to be eaten. The safest approach is to stay calm, remove what you can and seek advice if you are unsure. When it comes to children and home fragrance, it is always better to check than to guess.
