Ever turned on your vacuum only to be hit with a musty, old dust smell? You aren’t alone. Over time hair, dirt and moisture trapped inside your machine can start to stink, especially if you have pets. Hoover discs (also called scent discs) are a quick and easy way to fix this, turning your cleaning routine into a home fragrance session.
What Are Hoover Discs?
They are small, scented pads usually made of felt that are soaked in high-quality fragrance oils. You simply pop one inside your vacuum, and it releases a beautiful scent into the air through the exhaust vent as you move from room to room.
How Do They Work?
It’s all about the air and heat. The vacuum pulls air over the disc, picking up the fragrance and spreading it through your home. Vacuum motors get warm while they work. This heat helps the scent bloom, making it smell even better after you’ve been cleaning for a few minutes.
Where to Put Your Hoover Discs
Getting the placement right ensures your house smells great without affecting your vacuum’s suction.
For Bagged Vacuums (like the classic corded Henry or Miele)
For the best results, place the disc on top of the large cloth filter that sits above the bag. This keeps the disc clean and ensures maximum scent. You can also drop a disc directly into a brand-new vacuum bag before you start cleaning.
For Bagless Vacuums (standard Upright or Cylinder models)
If your machine has a foam or sponge filter, you can often tuck the disc near it (but never wedged against the motor or plastic parts). Many simply drop the disc into the dust container although it is better above or on top of the filter making sure to keep the fragranced disc away from plastic parts. Please note that hoover discs can sometimes stick to plastic parts and sponge filters causing a small amount of damage due to the fragrance oils.
Top Tips for Success
Clean First – Discs work best as a scent booster. If your vacuum is really stinky, empty the dust container and wash your filters first so the fragrance isn’t fighting old smells. Cleaning out pipes with a deep clean every 3-6 months helps keeps smells at bay.
Avoid the Scent Booster Beads Hack – You might see people vacuuming up laundry scent beads on social media, but these hard plastic beads can damage your vacuum’s internal parts. Stick to felt discs which are designed specifically for vacuums.
Longevity – One disc usually lasts about 2 to 4 weeks depending on how often you clean. When the scent starts to fade, just swap it for a fresh one. You can use as few or as many as you want, we recommend one or two as to not waste them.
Safety First – Always wash your hands after handling the discs preferably wear gloves to minimise contact, and keep them away from any parts like plastics (especially visible plastics), belts or the motor itself.
By adding this one simple step to your routine, you can make your whole house smell like fresh linen, summer meadows or your favorite perfume every time you clean.
