The other day, I was rushing out of the house at the last minute and completely forgot that I had a tealight lit under one of my wax burners. It wasn’t until I got home 3 hours later that I realised the tealight was still lit and my sizzlers were still filling the house with fragrance.
Thankfully, everything was fine but it reminded me just how easy it is to make this mistake.
When a tealight is burning, it should never be left unattended. While wax burners are generally safe when used correctly, there is always the possibility of something unexpected happening. A burner dish could crack, a tealight could burn unevenly, or another issue could occur while nobody is home. The biggest problem is that if you’re not there, you may not be aware of it until much later.
A simple way to help avoid this is to set a reminder or timer on your Alexa or Google Home device whenever you light a tealight. A quick timer can act as a helpful prompt to check your burner and blow the candle out before leaving the house. With busy lives full of distractions it is all too easy to forget the burner is still on as it becomes a set and forget.
An even safer option is to switch to an electric wax burner. Electric burners remove the open flame entirely and many models include built in timers. You can also use a timer socket to automatically switch them off after a set period. If you accidentally leave an electric burner on, the risk is significantly lower compared to leaving a naked flame unattended.
Home fragrance should be enjoyable and relaxing, so taking a few simple precautions can help keep it that way. If you’re using a tealight burner, always make sure the flame is extinguished before leaving the room or the house. Better still, consider an electric burner for extra peace of mind.
