How to Get Wax Melts Out of Carpet Simple Guide

If you just spilled your wax melt on your carpet, do not panic. We’ve all been there before, you’re moving your burner and balancing the wax pool perfectly and the next thing you know you’ve wobbled slightly and theres a blob of wax hardening onto your carpet. You can fix this with a few simple items you likely have in your house. Follow our 4 easy steps to get your carpet looking like the mishap never even happened.

Step 1: Freeze the Wax

The first rule is to never touch hot wax. Wiping it while it is liquid will only push it deeper into the carpet fibres.

  1. Put ice cubes in a plastic bag or use an ice pack.
  2. Place directly on the wax spill.
  3. Wait 10 to 15 minutes until the wax feels hard and brittle.

Make sure to not get the wax wet during this step as it can make it harder to clean.

    Step 2: Scrape It Up

Once the wax is hard, you want to remove as much as possible by hand.

    1. Use a blunt tool like a butter knife or a spoon to shatter the hardened wax.
    2. Gently lift and scrape the wax away from the carpet fibers.
    3. Vacuum up the loose pieces.

Step 3: Use an Iron to Lift the Rest

You may still see some wax stuck deep in the carpet. This is where a little heat helps.

    1. Place a clean paper towel (kitchen roll works) or a brown paper bag over the wax.
    2. Set your iron to its lowest heat setting. Do NOT use high heat and make sure to turn off the steam.
    3. Press the iron gently on the paper for about 10 seconds avoiding contact with the carpet.
    4. The wax will melt and soak into the paper. Move to a clean spot on the paper and repeat until no more wax comes up.

Safety Note: If you have a synthetic washable carpet (polypropylene) be very careful with heat. These carpets can melt quickly if the iron is too hot. If you are worried use a hairdryer on medium heat instead.

    Step 4: Clean the Stain

If the wax was coloured, it might leave a small stain behind.

    1. Dampen a clean white cloth with rubbing alcohol.
    2. Gently dab the stain. Do not rub, as rubbing can spread the color.
    3. If you do not have alcohol, a mix of mild dishwashing soap and warm water also works.
    4. Blot until the colour is gone, then let the area air dry.

    How to Prevent Future Spills

To avoid the hassle of accidental spills and the cleaning faff try using Scented Sizzlers (also called simmering granules). Sizzlers are fragranced salt crystals that smell great but do not melt into a liquid. If you knock them over, you simply vacuum them up. There is no hot wax to ruin your carpets and furniture and no scraping needed.
