If you just bought your first bag of scented sizzlers, you might be tempted to fill your burner to the brim. After all, more product should mean a stronger smell, right?
The short answer is no. In fact, using too many sizzlers can actually make your home smell less than if you used just a small amount.
We see this mistake all the time. Let’s look at why more isn’t always better and how to get the best scent from your simmering granules.
Why a Mountain of Sizzlers Fails
It seems like common sense. If one scoop smells good, ten scoops should smell ten times better. But sizzlers work on the science of heat and surface area.
Sizzlers are salt crystals soaked in fragrance oil. To smell them, the heat from your burner needs to reach that oil so it can turn into a vapour.
When you pile a mountain of sizzlers into your burner:
- The Bottom Gets Too Hot: The granules at the very bottom take all the heat. They might even scorch or turn brown.
- The Top Stays Cold: The sizzlers acts as a barrier. The heat cannot reach the top layer of the pile.
- The Scent Gets Trapped: The fragrance from the bottom has to fight its way through a thick pile of cold crystals to reach your nose. This leads to smothering of the scent.
The Teaspoon
To get the best results, you want a thin layer of granules. This lets the heat reach as many crystals at the same time.
For most standard burners, 1 to 2 teaspoons is the magic number.
- Small Rooms: Use 1 teaspoon.
- Large Rooms: Use 2 teaspoons spread out evenly.
If you can’t smell it, don’t add more. Instead, check your heat or your room’s airflow.

Why Your Burner Matters
Not all heat is the same. Your equipment changes how strong those sizzlers smell.
1. The Tealight Rule
Always use a standard 4-hour tealight. Never use the 8-hour monster tealights. These get far too hot for most burners. They will blast the scent away in minutes, leaving you with no smell for the rest of the day and also a fire risk with the majority of burners.
2. Electric Burners
Electric warmers are great because they provide a steady, even heat. Look for a burner with a 40W bulb or a heat plate. If the wattage is too low, your sizzlers won’t get warm enough to release the scent.
Troubleshooting – Why Can’t I Smell It?
If you used two teaspoons and still smell nothing, it’s likely one of these three things:
- Nose Blindness: Your brain is clever. If you stay in a room with a scent for more than 30 minutes, your brain mutes it so you can smell other things. Step outside for fresh air, then come back in. You’ll likely smell it again instantly!
- The “Scent Drain”: Is your burner near a window or an open door? A draft can pull the scent right out of the house before you ever smell it. Move your burner to a central spot away from drafts.
- Old Granules: Sizzlers don’t melt like wax. The granules stay in the dish even after the oil is all gone. If the color has faded or you haven’t changed them in 4 hours, it’s likely time to tip them out and start fresh.
Sizzlers vs. Wax Melts: Which is Stronger?
Beginners often ask which is better.
- Sizzlers give you an instant burst of scent. They are great for when guests are coming over and you need the house to smell good now.
- Wax Melts are slower to start but the scent often lasts longer throughout the day.
Sizzlers are much easier to clean up. When the smell is gone, you just tip the cooled sizzlers into the bin. No scraping messy wax!
Summary Tips for Beginners
- Less is more: Stick to 1-2 teaspoons.
- Spread them out: Don’t pile them up.
- Check the clock: Change them every 4 hours or once the color and scent fades.
- Avoid drafts: Keep windows closed near your burner.
Stop wasting your product by overfilling the dish. Use a small amount, keep it thin and enjoy a room-filling scent without the waste!
